Bio

Hubert Zemler

is a Polish drummer, composer, and improviser, and one of the most distinctive figures on Poland’s contemporary improvised, jazz, and experimental music scene.

He is known for his characteristic, sonoristic approach to the drum set, combining traditional playing techniques with prepared instruments, percussive objects, and extended techniques. His work moves at the intersection of jazz, contemporary music, minimalism, and free improvisation.

He is a member and co-founder of numerous original projects and improvising collectives, including the duo CEL (with Felix Kubin), the trio Ben Bekele (with Kamil Piotrowicz and Igor Wiśniewski), the groups Opla (with Piotr Bukowski), Magneto (with Bartłomiej Tyciński and Piotr Domagalski), Zemiter (with Marcin Dymiter), as well as the ensemble Mitch & Mitch and the performative music group PROSZEK (with Oskar Dawicki, Piotr Adamski, and Mikołaj Małek).

For several years, he has been working with Deaf performers, creating the Deaf Percussion Orchestra. The outcome of this collaboration is the audiovisual performance Bye, Bye Butterfly, developed together with its originator and scriptwriter Michał Mendyk, Robert Piotrowicz (electronic music), and Wiktor Freifeld and Piotr Cieślik, who were responsible for the visual layer of the performance.

In addition to his concert and studio activities, he composes music for interdisciplinary projects, including performances and theatre productions. His work is valued for its artistic consistency, openness to experimentation, and his ability to build compelling sonic narratives from seemingly minimal means.
